The Malawi Partnership is an educational link between Health workers from the Birmingham Children's Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blantyre Malawi.
· Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world!
· 40% of all deaths in Malawi are children under 5
· There is a crucial shortage of health care workers in Malawi with less than 2 doctors, nurses and midwives per 1000 of the population.
The Malawi Partnership was established in 2004 and since then has continued to grow. So far BCH has sent 20 doctors, 11 nurses, 6 technical staff, 4 administrative staff and 2 medical students!
Our staff have been to Malawi and implemented change to improve the health care for children. One nurse attended a course on making equipment from paper and cardboard and ran a paper technology workshop which benefited the surrounding villages. Staff return from Malawi with a new outlook and are able to increase the standard of care provided to children in our Birmingham hospital
“I have also rediscovered my passion as a physiotherapist, why I trained to become a physiotherapist and what I love about my job. This is a great motivator and will help pick up team morale!” Jenny Thomas - Senior Psysiotherapist at BCH
Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital also send over health care visitors to Birmingham. So far we have had 7 doctors, 15 nurses, 1 clinical officer and 1 student. These visitors learn valuable skills within Birmingham Children's Hospital which they can use when they return to Malawi. This link has proved to inspire these health care workers who return to Malawi with new skills and confidence.
“Continue with the programme so that our children in Malawi can continue to benefit from this, since we do learn new ways in caring for the children with different conditions.” Mirrium Dzinkambani, QECH Nurse Midwife Technician
