Story
Thanks for getting as far as visiting the page – hopefully I can now persuade you to part with some of your hard earned cash.
What are we doing?
Next summer Simon and I will be walking a marathon (ish) a day from Liverpool to London to raise money for Kent Air Ambulance. The walk should take 8 days, the route is currently being decided and will take us through some of the least scenic parts of England.
Neither of us have partaken in any proper exercise for a number of years so it won’t be easy but the more money you give the more likely it is that we will make it back home in one or more pieces.
Why are we doing it?
On May 28 2011 my father, Phil Pearson, was involved in a serious cycling accident whilst out on a ride with his cycling club in a fairly remote part of Kent. The accident left him with life threatening head injuries and in need of urgent medical attention. A rapid response from Kent Air Ambulance meant that Dad was flown to the Kings College Hospital in London where a world class neurosurgery team were preparing to operate. Although he was unconscious after the accident, my family and I were able to see him before he went in for surgery. The operation went well but sadly he passed away in Critical Intensive Care on June 6 2011.
I believe without the fast response my Dad had from Kent Air Ambulance that my family and I would not have had the chance to say goodbye on the day of the accident. The extent of his injuries meant that he had a very short time frame to be transported to the right hospital.
Every penny of the £1.7 million it costs each year to keep the life-saving helicopter in the sky 365 days a year comes from individuals, groups, businesses, companies and clubs – it relies on fundraising to keep it going. I think my Dad probably cost them around £2500, so the goal is to raise twice that to pay them back and to help someone else.
Why Liverpool to London?
The walk will start in Liverpool where my Dad grew up and end in Croydon where my Dad lived.
All this makes a marathon every day for 8 days seem like a walk in the park (a 200 mile park) – please please please give generously… whatever you were thinking of giving, add one then double it, I promise I will buy you a drink and never ask for sponsorship again.
