I met Tim as he happened to have the season ticket seat next to mine at Southampton FC from the 2010/11 season. We became great friends and loved watching our team progress from League 1 to the Premier League. During the 2011/12 season Tim occasionally struggled to climb the steps to reach his seat and on a number of occasions relied on me to help him up the steps. He knew that something was wrong and after a series of tests he was diagnosed as having Motor Neurone Disease, a disease that affects nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. These cells control the muscles in your body and the disease can make your muscles weak and lead to muscle wasting. Gradually, Tim became weaker and weaker, relied on his family and friends to help him get around on his motor scooter until he could no longer, walk, stand or attempt the most simple of movements. Sadly, Tim lost his life on 4th December 2014. He was a 'true Saint', always giving time for others and never moaning about his condition. He spent his last days in a hospice where he had amazing care and support.
Although, as I write this I am a complete road cycling novice I am determined to help raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease, raise money for the MND Association and the fantastic work that they do, and ride the Prudential Ride London/Surrey 100 mile event on the 2nd August 2015 in memory of my great friend Tim.
I need encouragement with my training (which has already started ......... I'm up to 26 miles so far!) and for the event itself. The best form of encouragement I can get is for you to donate money via this webpage. Please give generously to help my little legs endure the pain!
