Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
Martyn Compton was injured in Southern Afghanistan on 1st August 2006, whilst serving with D Squadron, Household Cavalry Regiment in Helmand Province. As the driver of a Spartan armoured reconnaissance vehicle, Martyn suffered third degree burns to 70 per cent of his body and a gunshot wound to his leg during a Taliban ambush on his vehicle.
He was the only survivor of the incident which resulted in the deaths of three colleagues, from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and direct Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack. Martyn Compton fell from his vehicle on fire, where he removed his burning body armour and helmet; and dashed under Taliban fire to safety. He then crawled 80 metres into cover where he sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
Martyn was rescued by colleagues and evacuated to Camp Bastion, where he fell into a coma which lasted for 3 months, in which time he was revived after “dying” three times. During this time he was flown to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex.
Martyn Compton has lost both of his ears and his nose, which have had to be rebuilt. He has undergone multiple operations to repair his face and body and is still having rehabilitation treatment at the Defence Services Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMSMRC) Headley Court, Surrey. This has enabled him to walk and regain full use of his arms and legs, although he will still require further surgery and care in the future.
In November 2008 Martyn will be walking 13 miles across New York, accompanied by family, friends and colleagues serving in the Household Cavalry. He hopes to raise a significant amount for the Fund.
