St Raphael's Hospice offers the best of palliative care to terminally ill patients in south west London and Surrey. Medical, nursing and support staff do everything possible to relieve pain and sustain quality of life in an atmosphere of peace and comfort, for patients of all faith or none.

Story

In 2012, Amma was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She put up a good fight and after many brave and unpleasant hospital visits it was realiaed in the summer of 2013 that her battle against ovarian cancer was lost.

When the doctors at Royal Marsden and St Heliers suggested that she should be moved St Raphael's Hospice I didn't really know what I should expect. I was told that they take care of those who are in life threatening circumstances.

On 10th July 2013, she was moved to St Raphael's Hospice. The reason that I can specify such a precise date is because I posted a facebook picture of the controls of Amma's bed at the hospice which, without question, I found on her first day there (I liked messing about with her leg and head positions).

The hospice was nothing like a hospital. Amma had her own room which was more like a room of a hotel than a hospital. There were no unpleasant smells. A door in the room where Amma was staying opened to a small garden which was well looked after. The staff were lovely and very welcoming. I'm not just saying that because they allowed me to plug in my PS3 into the TV in Amma's room. They allowed Vithiyaa and I to sleep beside Amma and catered for us until Amma passed on 16th July 2013.

I was over the moon when I got the call from St Raphael's Hospice to say that my application for a place in their London Marathon team was successful. Training and fundraising for them will be a great honour and I'm looking forward to the London Marathon on 22nd April 2018. I would appreciate your support in helping me reach my target of £1950 for this cause that is extremely close to mine and my sister's hearts.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
