Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

As some of you know, I will be undertaking the ‘Marathon of the Sands’ in April next year.

Often cited as the toughest footrace on Earth and certainly the most iconic, competitors must run over 150 miles in the Moroccan Sahara over the course of 7 days, carrying everything they need to survive for that week, excluding water, which is supplied along the way.

The terrain varies from vertiginous sand dunes to stony, flat baked desert and temperatures can vary from below freezing at night, to above 40 degrees during the day.  Although the course varies each year according to the changing landscape, the longest stage is usually around 50 miles and can take some competitors more than 24 hours to complete.

All of the costs for the trip are being met by yours truly but as you’d expect I have chosen to use the opportunity to raise funds for a charity which is important to me.  My brother lost a very close friend to Cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease) some ten years or so ago and the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA) provides information and support to families affected by it.  In order to properly round off the adventure, I have also agreed to take part in next year’s London Marathon for CMA, which is taking place 6 days after I return from the Sahara.  I am not anticipating a particularly quick time!
