Story

My husband Phil is a trustee of the wonderful Awamu; a charity that works in the slums of the Ugandan capital of Kampala. Awamu works to support some amazing women who lead their community.

These women take in orphaned or abandoned children and bring them up alongside their own children in tiny houses which often flood. Awamu provides funding so that the children can attend school and get a vital education. Awamu provides training and equipment so that the women can learn the skills they need to earn a living (you'll have seen the beautiful and funky Awamu children's clothes, lampshades and cushions at our house). In a recent project Awamu has supported the women and children in starting their own community gardens where they grow nutritious food for their families as well as selling the surplus for an income.

The inspirational women supported by Awamu show me what female empowerment is all about. They can make all the difference in the world and we can support them to do that.

So I thought long and hard about what to do to show my support and raise money. I thought that in reality people want to give money when someone does something quite unpleasant and hard. And I thought the splits fitted the bill perfectly.

So I've given myself 11 weeks to try to re-learn the right leg splits. As one of the stiffest gymnasts ever to call oneself a gymnast this is a major challenge, especially as I reach 40 and the sinews ain't as elastic as they once were! So cough up peeps. You know you want to.

I'll post regular videos of how I'm getting on and I'll make my final attempt on Monday 9th July. There will be plenty of tips on how to improve your flexibility so feel free to join me on my journey.
