February - After a collision with another cyclist, Meg is to wear a sling to proptect a broken collar bone. With only 11 weeks to go until the event this is something of bad timing!! Meg is to train on an indoor static bike.

April - Collar bone recovering, the pair are set to embark on a weekend on Fundraising. On Thursday 7th Meg will be giving mental health awareness talks to the year 10 and 11 students of Coombeshead College, and holding a non school uniform day. Then on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th, both will attempt the entire distance of the London to Paris ride, between them, on static bikes in the foyer of Torbay Hospital. Please come an support their mighty challenge with cheers, bananas and donations!.

                              ---------***************-----------

Mental health is something of a taboo subject in the UK, despite the shocking fact that 1 in 4 adults, 2 in 5 old people in a care home, and 10% of children will suffer some form of mental health problem in the course of a year!

For those affected by mental illness life can become truely un-bearable. Relationships, friends, jobs and family are often lost, leaving people feeling lonely and helpless. Life is truely turned upside down for all affected - including friends and family!

Unfortunately recovery from mental illness is a long and hard battle, but the more support available the easier the challenge can be. ‘Mind’ is the UK's leading mental health charity and it works to provide individuals with the support they need to help them get their lives together and move to a happier place.

In October a friend and I ambitiously signed up to the 300 mile cycle challenge from London to Paris in just 4 days(!), in order to findraise £2,700 for ‘Mind’. We sold cakes and cards, packed bags, organised non school uniform days and badgered our friends for support, whilst simultaneously trying to find gaps in the snow for training.

Unfortunately the friend who I originally planned to cycle with pulled out over Christmas, but there was a contingency….. My Mum Mel!!

Mum said that I should write on this blurb how she hopes she will be as fit as me by May in order to complete the challenge, but if I’m really honest it’s going to be the other way around. Those who know mum will know she is already rather fit; James, Rachel (brother and sister) and I in fact refer to her as ‘The Machine’. Mum needs to be more worried about having a sore bum! I will worry about the stamina.

Completing the training and 4 day event is going to be hugely tough, and the challenge does not stop there. We still need to reach our target!! With a Valentines Day cake sale at IBM, a mental health awareness and non school uniform day at my old school, a rehearsal cycle of the 300 miles (in a day!!!) between Mum and myself in the foyer of Torbay Hospital, and another bag pack chucked in for good measure, we should be well insight of that mighty £2,700 target – but we still need your help!
