Story

Vaccines provide the best protection against meningitis and septicaemia.

In countries where available vaccines have been implemented, there has been a dramatic fall in the number of cases of the disease and a large reduction in the number of deaths and disabilities caused by meningitis and septicaemia.

However, not all stains of meningitis and septicaemia are vaccine preventable, whilst others do not cover all the sub-strains of bacteria which causes disease which is why our work to fund research to develop and improve vaccines is so important.

The MRF Meningococcus Genome Library represents a major step forward for vaccine development.

By creating an online library of the complete genetic blueprint of the the meningococus, one the main bacteria which cause meningitis and septicaemia, researchers will have access to information which will help them develop vaccines to cover all strains and sub-strains of the meningococcus.

In addition, the MRF Meningococcus Genome Library, will help investigate vaccine escape - when the meningococcus changes its surface structure to trick our immune systems.

By supporting the MRF Meningococcus Genome Library, you are supporting the search for new and better vaccines to combat meningitis and septicaemia and prevent death and disability from meningitis and septicaemia.
