We fund vital research into breast cancer to increase survival after diagnosis

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am rallying my friends and colleagues to undertake this mammoth ride in order to support the fantastic research being undertaken in the fight against breast cancer.

Where our journey will take us: We will set off from Metflex at 8am on the 7th September and take the following route;

Whalley, Mitton, Bashall Eaves, The Inn at Whitewell (low road not direct route over the hill), Dunsop Bridge, Trough of Bowland, Quernmore (past the lookout tower), Lancaster (past the Williamson Memorial), through the centre of Lancaster, over the river to Carnforth, Torrisholme and finish at the Vale of Lune Rugby Club.

We welcome all donations large and small as this is a deserving charity encompassing the UK, involved in the largest studies in the UK.

A bit about the charity:  Against Breast Cancer funds ground breaking research by expert scientists using one of the UK's largest collections of breast cancer patient samples to identify vital information that could improve detection and lead to increased survival after diagnosis.

Our research is studying new ways that could help doctors identify and treat breast cancer faster and more effectively.

We look at the whole woman: her tumour, her response to the tumour and her environment through three interlinked areas of research: Tumour biology, Immunology and Diet & Lifestyle.

1/ Tumour biology  - preventing secondary spread

Our biochemists are studying aggressive breast cancers to find out why they spread to other parts of the body (this is known as 'secondary spread') and how this can be prevented.

2/ Immunology - patient response

Our researchers are investigating the low level of natural immunity in breast cancer patients, how it can be stimulated to fight secondary spread of the disease and whether this could lead to the development of a blood test.

3/ Diet and lifestyle - environmental factors

Our on-going Diet & Lifestyle study of over 3,000 breast cancer patients in 56 hospitals across the UK will help establish how diet, lifestyle and complementary treatments affect the spread of breast cancer.

About the charity

Against Breast Cancer are working to prevent secondary breast cancer by funding unique research into the development of new treatments, including ultimately a vaccine; improving upon current blood tests; and assessing diet and lifestyle for factors that increase the risk of secondary breast cancer.
