Our wonderful son Thomas was diagnosed in June 2007, aged 2, with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Thomas is a happy little boy who appears as healthy and active as all of his friends. However, DMD is a very serious medical condition; a progressive muscle-wasting disease for which there is currently no treatment to delay or reverse the symptoms.
- It has a 100% fatality rate
- Few people with the condition live beyond their mid-20s.
- Most boys are in a wheelchair by aged 10-12
We need your involvement to help fund research into finding treatments for DMD. There are already some clinical trials underway and we remain hopeful that 'a change is gonna come' (to quote Sam Cooke). It can’t come soon enough.
The funds raised, in conjunction with Action Duchenne (the country's principal DMD charity), will go towards funding critical research projects aimed at identifying a cure and effective treatments, for this life shattering condition. The various research projects will hopefully lead to a cure for all boys who have this condition. Please, please give generously to this campaign and make a difference for Thomas and all the boys with DMD.
About the ‘Mount Everest’ climb.
Thomas’ Dad, Mark, works for Hertsmere Borough Council, in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. He has persuaded a group of extremely gullible colleagues that they can climb Mount Everest without ever having to leave the Hertfordshire town of Borehamwood. How?
The Council offices are a five storey building with two comfortable elevators…and a cold, dark stairwell. For a two week period in January 2008, a group of staff from the Planning and Building Control Unit – based on the top floor - will be abstaining from use of the lift unless absolutely necessary. They have also committed to spending part of their lunch hours and time after work pounding the steps! If they can climb all the steps 553 times during that period, they will have scaled the equivalent of Mount Everest - a mere 29,000 ft.
And no, they will not be allowed to use the lift to get back to the ground floor…
But they will be raising funds, reducing their carbon footprint and reducing their waistlines!
