Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, please read my story below and give as little or as much as you can, every little helps.
My Grampy Gerry was one in a million! The tall dark handsome type. A smart, strong, hard working family man, the perfect embodiment of a 1950’s husband. Building a business and a home from the ground up. He was always laughing and joking and despite his 6ft stature and booming voice, adults and kids of every age adored him.
In 2013 Grampy was officially diagnosed with vascular dementia, after years of hidden symptoms.
Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which damages and eventually kills the brain cells.
Watching someone you love experience this cruel disease is heartbreaking, watching him fade away bit by bit is something that will forever change you both. This was incredibly difficult, but it’s important to remember that it’s so much more difficult frightening for those diagnosed with Dementia.
For the next several years Nan was his full time caregiver, with plenty of help from family, carers and nurses.
Dementia was something no one in our family had encountered before and all the research published couldn’t of prepared us for the hard journey ahead.
Shortly after being diagnosed Grampy battled with being wheelchair bound and needing carers 3 times a day. But in true gentlemen fashion, Gerry battled on for 4 years with no complaints of his ailment but with a smile.
Gerry lost his fight with Dementia in 2017.
I am walking in memory of my Grampy but to also raise awareness. To help raise money to allow the charity to assist other families who are going through the same difficulties. To help fund research. But most importantly to achieve a world without Dementia.
Thank You.
