Steve Webb London to Paris Charity Bike Ride · 2 April 2013

Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma. We make it possible to live longer and better lives with myeloma. Through research and treatments, we find new ways to a cure. Together, we are the cure.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'll not tell you all sorts of sob stories about how a good mate of mine has been suffering with Myeloma for the last two years or more, why - because he wouldn't really want that.

In brief, Chris Pugh aka "Chris' World Famous Barber Shop" is married to Christine, has two children Cameron (16) and Olivia (13), who up until the last six months or so, have not known how poorly their dad has been.

He was originally diagnosed with Myeloma after he went for tests for a suspected collapsed lung, this after coming back from one of his regular 10k training runs.

Never one to moan or complain about anything, he just got on with things and dealt with it, despite his worsening health.

Up until Christmas I have to say, he looked really well, even putting on some much needed weight - brought on by the steroids to counter act the chemo. It was around this time when I thought for the first time, that Chris had started to look unwell.

A suggestion was thrown around at work to do a bike ride for charity and having seen what Chris has gone through, I along with Arthur Little, hopefully Gavin Bailey and super fit customer now friend Andrew Baker, decided that London - Paris in the middle of August, would be a challenge we could take on and in the process, raise some money for Myeloma UK Cancer Research. We're also going to be joined by Graham Worth, our "Passepartout", for the trip, he'll be our life support vehicle.

To truly understand what Chris is going through, please take time out to read Christines daily blog, which she is doing from Christies Hospital whilst Chris is going through his treatment.

There are two objectives, first one is to raise some money for cancer research and the second and most satisfying, is to see Chris doing the same bike ride with us next year.

Training Update

Had a bit of a scare when I had to stop training for approx. 4 weeks with a knee problem which needed a course physio - and a suggested "bike fit" at the Velodrome, which I did and would highly recommend.

Just done a couple of (what I think are really tough) rides, a 56 miler over the Cat and Fiddle last weekend (21st July) and a 60 miler to Arley Hall via Knutsford and tatton Park. Off now for a weeks break with Paula to France and yes I'm taking my bike, so the training will continue even whilst I'm on holiday.

Thanks for all the messages of support and donations, it's a massive boost when I get them.

The best news to come from all of this, is that Chris after 2 years of nothing but bad news, has been getting great news now for the last 4 - 5 weeks.

Paula, Chris and Christine and Karen and Gary are all coming over to Paris to see it finish - cannot wait.

London - Paris now completed and the sleepless nights, inadequate food, sore and aching body parts, as well as near miss traffic accidents are a distant memory. So what next?

Despite a massive amount of generosity from a huge number of people, we haven't reached the target we set ourselves, which we are desperate to do.

So, this Sunday 1st September, we are doing the Manchester 100km Bike Ride, starting and finishing from Wythenshawe Park (not Arch to Arc granted) but 100km on a Sunday morning all the same!!

So please help us reached the £5,000 target, going to press (27/8/13 at 22.41) we had raised £4,115.

Thank you all once again.
