Founded in 1984, we're the UK charity for all affected by Addison's disease and adrenal insufficiency. We work to support and promote better medical understanding of this rare, life-threatening condition. All donations go to our 'unrestricted' funds, to help us in this vital work.

Story

Addison’s is a condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones. It affects 1 in 10,000 people, meaning it is a very rare disease.

Although Addison’s is a lifelong condition, symptoms can be controlled with replacement hormones. But those living with the condition need to take steroid medication several times a day to stay healthy and are also at risk of having a life-threatening adrenal crisis.

Managing Addison's is challenging and life-changing and there is not enough medical understanding, clinical research or support for patients.

My best friend Cat has the condition and I have seen how it can impact everything, from having low energy day to day, to developing secondary health conditions such as Type 1 Diabetes which require extra treatment, to affecting emotional wellbeing.

The Addison's Disease Self-Help Group supports the community by providing practical support to those affected, as well as working to promote understanding among HCPs and campaigning for better patient outcomes and experience.

I am so proud of Cat for how she has taken it all in her stride but I know how much she would value more awareness of Addison's and more support.

As a very small charity, every pound raised for ADSHG really does make a difference!
