I made it!!!
What a day! Blessed with perfect weather, I took to the streets of Portsmouth this morning and completed the Great South Run 2009 in 1hr 17mins 11secs. It could have been less but I was tuck behind two 'Where's Wally' runners at the start and I don't think their primary objective was to break the 7minute mile mark! General fitness levels and the final 2 mile home straight into a strong head wind also did little to help the knees but I eventually crossed the line exhausted but chuffed to bits!
Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me. I genuinely used this as motivation particularly towards the end of the run. Thank you so much.
Please feel free to add to this total if you can as every penny counts....
The Need
St James Mission has lots of water but it is 100 metres below ground.
The water is pumped up from boreholes which are now getting old and in need of repair. The pumps are driven by electric motors – fine except for the frequent power cuts now experienced in Zimbabwe. It was this problem that caused the school to have to close early last December. Also the ancient Lister diesel engines for the pumps need repairing or replacing. The 600 girl students are very clean and love their showers, albeit cold! Water is also required for toilets and cooking of course.
The Answer
The solution is threefold:
1. Provide power from a generator, either by repairing the existing one and linking it to the motors, or by buying another.
2. Increase the water storage capacity with a new reservoir
3. Sink a new borehole which costs about £12,000.
Please contribute whatever you can. It is really appreciated...
Thanks
Nick
