Education isn't just one of the best ways to end poverty, but as Nelson Mandela said, education is the most powerful weapon to change the world for the better. This is why we are collecting money for a project that helps to train teachers in Cambodia. Cambodia, one of the poorest countries in Asia, has been ravaged by civil war, and has, therefore, totally inadequate educational facilities.
THE ISSUE - Education
Education is a dream for many children in developing communities, not a reality. One hundred and thirty million children have no access to learning at all.
As you read this, millions of children miss out on school because of poverty. Some children can't go to school because they have to work just to survive. Furthermore, in many countries, including Cambodia, there aren't enough school buildings, books or even trained teachers.
THE PROJECT - Teacher Training in Cambodia
The funds we raise will be donated to one of Plan UK's projects in Cambodia. Although Cambodia has recently enjoyed some years of relative peace after decades of devastating war, genocide and civil conflict, Cambodia still remains one of the poorest countries in Asia, with more than a third of its people living below the poverty line, and a totally inadequate education system:Over a third of children do not attend primary school, andn early 80% do not go to secondary school.
We will try to finish the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge - a 25-mile walk over three of the highest peaks in England with over 5,200ft of ascent - in less than twelve hours on the first of September.
