Colchester Half Marathon · 13 March 2016

Roman River Music produces music festivals among the salt marshes and wide open skies of coastal Essex, combining strong grassroots support from volunteers, a truly international quality music programme, and access and participation opportunities for over 1,000 young people each year.

Story

I ran in aid of Roman River Music which gives music opportunities to thousands of young people from all backgrounds in the Borough of Colchester.

Thank you to all the wonderful generous people who have donated. It gave me a fantastic boost on the day.

About Roman River Music - we really want every child growing up in Colchester to have the opportunity to be involved with music, and we run a range of projects ranging from singing and composing with whole classes from primary schools through to mentoring and masterclasses for talented young professionals. The projects aim to make best use of the 100+ top professional musicians who visit the area for the Roman River Festival and concerts each year.

It would be fantastic if you felt able to help with an amount however large or small. Every pound will make a difference to a young person, and I really appreciate your support - many thanks.

Orlando

What will the money be spent on?

£1,000 funds two primary schools to be involved with our singing workshops. This is a very popular part of our offering - the kids love it and it really increases their self-confidence. They compose a song with one of our fantastic workshop leaders, then perform it at the festival on stage to hundreds of people. It would be wonderful if you could help make this happen.

Isn't music just for a select few?

No! Music is for everyone, and anyone can get a huge amount out of singing, playing and listening to music. There are academic reports backing up the fact that being actively involved with making music helps children understand maths and English and increases social awareness and self-confidence.

For instance, ‘The Importance of Music’, a 2011 DCMS Government publication, says ‘music can make a powerful contribution to the education and development of children, having benefits which range from academic ones to the growth of social skills and contribution to overall development. It is a unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. Ofsted say that children’s involvement in music engages and re-engages pupils, increasing their self esteem, and maximising their progress in education and not just in music.’

Here's what one of our participants wrote last year.

Participating in the Roman River Side-by-Side ensemble was not only a fantastic opportunity, improving my orchestral skills, but was also really great fun. Coached by friendly professional musicians, I learnt new repertoire and skills that helped my playing to grow and develop. Apart from the coaching sessions, which were always great to be at, the concert at the end was wonderful. Playing alongside professional musicians in the amazing setting of St Mary's Church (Stoke by Nayland) was a delightful experience, since I not only benefitted from their help, but also had fun playing high level pieces. I recommend this to any willing musicians, because it will be one of those experiences in your life that you will never forget!         Lottie Anstee, aged 14
