100km to make cancer less lonely

Joshua Smith is raising money for Alike

Thames Path Ultra Challenge 2026 · 12 September 2026 to 13 September 2026 ·

Alike was created to take the loneliness out of cancer and help people affected by cancer find connection through digital peer support. Our app is a space for cancer patients and survivors to share experiences, chat safely, and feel part of something real. Any time. Any place. Any stage.

Story

On 12 September I'm running the Thames Path Challenge. 100km, London to Henley-on-Thames, on foot, in one go. I've roped in a few mates too: Cal, Jaffa and Max. All mad enough to say yes and support a great cause.

My good friend Bradley had cancer twice before he was 25. In 2018, he spent three months in hospital having chemo and a stem cell transplant, and while he was in there he came up with the idea for Alike. They're a charity with one job: taking the loneliness out of cancer.

They've built the UK's only free community support app that lets anyone diagnosed with cancer connect, share and chat with others who've been through it too. Any time, any place, any stage. Simple as that. Nobody should have to go through cancer on their own, and that's what the money's for.

A little bit about me, Cal Jaffa and Max Heywood!

I got into running in 2024 and I've been setting myself longer and longer distances ever since. I've done 100km once before. Before that the furthest I'd gone was 50km. I'm not dreading it as such, but I know full well I'm going to be hurting the next day. The lads are a different story.

For most of the group, this is completely uncharted territory. None of the lads I've convinced to join me have ever completed a 100km ultramarathon before, and one of them has never even run a marathon. We're looking at 12 to 20 hours on our feet, and there are going to be some very painful hours out there.

And to make it more daft, I'm recovering from an injury at the minute and I can't train, so I've got three weeks to get myself fit and then take on 100km without much of a training block behind me. Extra layer to the challenge, as we all reckon if you're doing something for charity it should be properly hard.

Something you know isn't going to be easy, otherwise what's the point! If we're asking people to donate to a cause this important, we want to earn it.

Any donation, big or small, would mean a lot. Thank you!
