Story
This weekend, I will be walking 100km (62 miles - which is 2.4 marathons) to raise money for a cat and dog neuter clinic in Sri Lanka run by Lucas Helps Dogs. I will be walking from Liverpool to Wrexham via the Wirral Way and then into Wales on Saturday, and then camping at an alpaca farm for the night before doing a loop and circling back towards Liverpool via Runcorn on Sunday. I estimate it is going to take around 13-14 hours of walking each day.
I will be heading back to Sri Lanka in February 2027 to help at a 4-day pop-up neuter clinic in Yala National Park - an area in rural Sri Lanka with zero access to veterinary care, and an overwhelming population of dogs and cats who reproduce uncontrollably and have preventable conditions such as pyometra (uterine infection), TVT (a transmissible cancer) and diseases such as Parvovirus and Distemper.
Neutering is the only way to effectively reduce the stray animal population, and therefore the preventable suffering and disease transmission of these dogs and cats.
I will be heading back with a group of volunteers, alongside a local team, and will be carrying out as many spays and castrates as possible. We will also be vaccinating all dogs against rabies, parvovirus, distemper, infectious hepatitis, and leptospirosis. We will be vaccinating cats against rabies. All will be treated for parasites, and dogs with TVT are given a dose of chemotherapy.
Vaccinating for rabies is such an important part of the clinic to reduce rabies incidence in the country and therefore to protect adults and children. 59,000 people die from rabies every year worldwide - 99% of these are from dog bites.
If you’re able to donate anything towards my fundraiser then I’d greatly appreciate it! It costs £30 for a dog to get a neuter and vaccination. For every dog or cat that we neuter, we are not just reducing their disease risk, but it also prevents thousands of animals being born into a difficult (and often very short) life on the streets. 100% of the money raised will go to the neuter clinic!
Thank you! :)
