Story
In August 2016, I became critically ill with acute pancreatitis and spent two weeks in intensive care fighting for my life.
10 years later, I’m marking this milestone by taking on 10 races in aid of Guts UK to raise awareness of pancreatitis and support research into better understanding and treatment of the condition.
Recovering from pancreatitis made me completely rethink my health and lifestyle. Quitting alcohol and smoking was the first step, but the journey to becoming the fittest and healthiest version of myself is still ongoing.
I’ve always had an addictive personality and tend to throw myself fully into whatever I do. For many years that focus went into playing pool, where at one point the only exercise I was getting was walking around pool tables!
During Covid everything shut down and I channelled that same drive into golf, which quickly became an obsession in the best possible way. It got me outside walking miles, constantly chasing improvement in a sport that’s incredibly challenging, and it completely transformed my mindset. That change is what led me to build consistency with my fitness and discover a love for running.

Since being affected by pancreatitis, things haven’t always been straightforward. I’ve spent years learning how to manage digestion and nutrition, still figuring out what works best for my body. Although I’ve been fortunate in many ways, pancreatitis has never been something I’ve been able to leave behind.
Things accelerated when I moved house and suddenly had Wyre Forest CrossFit and the local leisure centre right on my doorstep. What started with running and gym sessions evolved into building more structure around my training and nutrition, eventually giving me the confidence to walk into my first CrossFit class.
10 years ago, I could never have imagined pushing my body the way I do today.
What still shocks me is how much about pancreatitis remains unknown, even now. There is currently no treatment that can stop the inflammation in acute pancreatitis, and from my own experience I know how frightening and unpredictable the condition can be. Supporting research and awareness through Guts UK is a huge part of why this challenge matters so much to me.

Over the next year I’ll be taking on 10 races, including my first HYROX, a half marathon and ultimately my first marathon.
But this challenge is more than just the races. Throughout the year I’ll also be sharing the journey behind it, including my experiences with pancreatitis, a short series explaining the condition and recovery, and supporting Guts UK’s ‘Kranky Panky’ pancreatitis awareness campaign.
I've had great support along the way from friends I’ve made through Specsavers and the sports I’m part of. From pool through to running and CrossFit, the encouragement across these communities is something else.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any help you’re able to give. Whether that’s a one-off donation or supporting races along the way, every contribution helps move us closer to the goal.
Together we can make a real difference in raising awareness of pancreatitis and supporting Guts UK’s work to improve understanding and treatment for those affected.
