Clair, Hayley, Karianne and Kristy - We're walking 13 miles to raise money for Maggies.
Read on to find out why this charity means so much to Karianne....
In October 2024, my best friend, housemate, sister-from-another-mister, and all-round beautiful human being Suzy was told the lump in her back that she referred to as “creme egg” sized was in reality 11cm long and had entered its villain era of being a cancerous Sarcoma. How rude.
Cue much shock, confusion, tears, and a memorable Christmas season being logistics manager for Radiotherapy trips to Nottingham City Hospital.
Throughout that strange festive period, spending weekdays staying at the Hospital hotel and weekends between Lincoln and Birmingham, Suzy’s sanity was only maintained by the solace of Maggie’s – a “home away from home” that provided support, comfort, and daily activities to engage and uplift those who were currently having treatment. Suzy – because she is Like That™ - immediately found the writing group and traded poetry and prose over tea, biscuits, and the occasional home-made treat. But there was always something happening at the centre, whether it was writing, yoga, tai chi, or even just a friendly chat with others who were going through similar experiences – Maggie’s was truly a saving grace for Suzy and provided her with human connections that were not just limited to the 10 minutes of Laser Time (Radiotherapy) a day.
I’m please to say that, as of February this year, the evil Sarcoma was defeated (removed) and is no more! And after months of slow but steady healing, she’s now back to work and pretty much back to… well, I was going to say normal, but I don’t think she’s ever been that. Herself. Tired, achy, and with less back that she had before, but she is unequivocally back to herself.
Maggie’s Centre in Nottingham has been one of the few bright lights throughout this journey – providing comfort and a place to go when it was needed. No matter who you are or where you are from, if you have been affected by cancer in any way, they are there to offer a space for you to sit, to talk, or to just enjoy a banging cup of tea in peace if that’s what you need.
