Story
Hi, I'm Amy!
I’ll be participating in the London Marathon on 21st April to support JDRF, the leading global Type 1 Diabetes charity that works every day to help people live better with the condition, prevent people ever developing it and one day, find a cure. It is a charity that has helped my family and me to navigate life with Type 1 Diabetes. There are currently 400,000 people in the UK with type 1 diabetes, over 29,000 of them are children.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2010, shortly after I started secondary school; it was a really tough time. However, my concerns about living with a lifelong chronic condition were eased when I met a local lady who had successfully run the London Marathon whilst managing Type 1 herself. Her name was Hayley, she showed me her medal and talked about her journey with Type 1. It's been a comfort to know someone who 'gets it' and Hayley encouraged me to live life fully, and that's what I try to do!
In 2016 my mum also took on the London Marathon, raising much needed funds for JDRF.
So now it's my turn to tie up the laces and give back to the charity that has provided so much support to me and many others.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition that prevents my pancreas from producing the vital hormone, insulin. To overcome this, I must inject myself with insulin multiple times a day to enable the movement of glucose from the blood to the body so that I have energy to do things, like running this marathon!
Your generous support will play a vital role in ensuring that JDRF can persist in its efforts to make a meaningful difference in the diabetes community.
Thank you so much for the support!
Amy :)
