Story

Sponsored Sleeper Carry – 17 Miles for John

On Friday 18th September 2026, the team at 1stInRail will be taking on a challenge that is definitely going to test the legs, backs and shoulders!

We’ll be carrying a full-size railway sleeper approximately 17 miles, starting at Northern Trains’ Hill House Depot in Huddersfield and finishing at Neville Hill Depot in Osmondthorpe, Leeds.

But there’s a very important reason behind the madness.

We’re taking on the challenge in memory of the late, great John Beard.

John was a much-loved friend and colleague, and we wanted to do something memorable in his name while raising money for a cause that makes a genuine difference to people and families affected by cancer.

All money raised will be donated to Rotherham Cancer Care Centre, helping them continue the incredible support they provide to those who need it.

The challenge will be a proper team effort, with the sleeper being carried throughout the route and plenty of tired arms and shoulders expected along the way!

Everyone is welcome to join us.

Whether you want to take a turn carrying the sleeper, walk part of the route, complete the full 17 miles or simply support us with a donation, we’d love to have you involved.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us make this challenge worthwhile and raise as much as possible in John’s memory.

17 miles. One sleeper. One team. One great cause.

Let’s do John proud. ❤️
