Story
This year feels a little different writing the same post I always do. After becoming a mummy this year, I don't want to imagine the worst happening to my little boy and him not being able to get to hospital on time. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a dedicated helicopter for emergency rapid response; it was established in 2000 and has saved thousands of lives since then. Including mine;
You've all heard this story but one of the biggest events in my timeline is the 28th July 2010, it was this day that I misjudged the distance between myself and an oncoming car and found myself being knocked down. I had a dilated pupil (sign of a brain injury), hard stomach (sign of internal bleeding), clear broken femur and lots of cuts and grazes; as a result of this they decided to play it safe and call me an air ambulance to get to hospital. My mum travelled with me in the air ambulance and my dad by road to meet us there.
At hospital I was taken for a CT scan which showed swelling on my brain, I was taken to PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) where I was sedated and placed into a medically induced coma.
During this time my family had to just wait, thinking about what they went through upsets me and I can't imagine it. Watching my little boy smile in his sleep in my arms as I write this, I can't imagine this happening to him.
I'm grateful to my family and friends for being patient with me, I'm grateful for the NHS for looking after me and helping me become independent again, I'm grateful for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and everybody who raises funds for them.
Due to my brain injury, I did some repetitive 360 turns in my bed, resulting in another break to my femur meaning they subsequently had to fly in a pin from America to fix my leg back together. [This is still in my leg].
For the last 5 years, a group of some of my favourite people and myself have walked a 20 mile route from Sherburn in Elmet (the location of my Road Traffic Accident) to Leeds’ General Infirmary (where I was airlifted). Previously we have walked this route on the anniversary of this date but last year we did it on the Saturday and it was so lovely to see everyone support us! Therefore, this year we will be completing this walk on the 26th July.
We would appreciate any support in order to raise money for this life saving charity whether support along the route on the day, sponsorship or sharing of this post.
