Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and for sponsoring my marathon hike on 25th October.
With your help and support, Nowzad have begun relocating the Kabul donkey sanctuary. The funds raised so far have helped lay foundations for new stables, constructing temporary accommodation at both sites, and tiling our quarantine areas and new kitchens to get them ready for food prep. We're also busy moving all of our medical supplies and equipment, including some pretty big operating tables!
While we're simply amazed at how close we are to hitting our goal so quickly, frustratingly the need for funds doesn't stop here. Operating a hospital and donkey sanctuary always involves eye-watering running costs like animal food costs and staff wages for our amazing Afghan team (the average monthly salary in Kabul is $300 USD).
Plus, this move is a unique opportunity to build better facilities than ever before. We want to make our hospital even more effective at treating urgent welfare cases and our sanctuary capable of housing at least double the number of donkeys and horses in need.
Once we reach the £100k relocation target, we would love to do the following:-
Build an exercise run for the dogs —we currently have 39 dogs we’re caring for at the hospital. The exercise run provides an area for our dog trainer Awrang to work with the dogs on their behaviour and socialisation, ready for adoption.
Set up a new functioning hoist for the many hospitalised horses and donkeys that are just too weak to stand.
Dig a well at the sanctuary to reach water rather than relying on trucks bringing it in regularly. (The wells in Kabul are having to be dug deeper and deeper as Kabul edges closer to being the first city in the world to run dry).
Build rodent-proof storage areas for the hay, barley, alfalfa, and fresh vegetables we buy in for the working animals.
Purchase many vital medicines we always need monthly, like vaccinations, antibiotics and pain killers, anaesthesia, and specific anaesthetic masks for different sized animals. On top of all this, there is still the funds needed for Nowzad's ongoing work helping animals in Ukraine.
