What the?!
Anyone who knows me will know I am always up for a challenge. Not content with any off-the-peg organised event, Iโve gone rogue and created my own.
Starting on September 1 2023, I will attempt to run 10 miles a day, every day, for the whole of the month - a total of 300 miles.
Come rain or shine, I will don my trainers and put one foot in front of the other to complete those 10 daily miles.
Running 10 miles for two or maybe even three days on the trot doesnโt feel completely insurmountable - but I can only speculate the cumulative impact doing this for 30 consecutive days is going to have on my body (and mind).
Itโs not just managing the progressive fatigue, the emerging niggles, staying on top of my rest, nutrition and fuelling, Iโve also got to honour my commitments to work and of course looking after my little boy.
As I am going to be unsupported doing this (FYI: thereโs no behind-the-scenes medic) Iโm intrigued to see how my body copes.
I have no doubt that this challenge will be as much mental as it is physical, possibly more so, and maintaining morale and motivation is going to be so important.
Running for MND Association
After all the effort and training I put in to successfully complete an ultramarathon in April this year, I regretted not raising any money for charity.
This time Iโve dedicated this challenge to a cause which is particularly poignant.
Adam is a close friend of mine and his father, David Shore, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2018; it is a cruel disease which is painful and progressively locks sufferers in a failing body, robs people of their loved ones and I know that it has had a profound effect on Adam and his family.
Hopefully Iโll be able to share more about David's story in due course but in the meantime you can read more about David on his blog: https://davidsmndblog.co.uk/
Let the training commence
As I write this there is just under seven weeks until the start of the challenge. Between now and September 1 my training plan is to build up my mileage, resilience and endurance which Iโm going to be documenting on my Instagram account (@heathermckay).
As preparing for a challenge like this is very much uncharted territory for me, if anyone has any professional advice on what preparations I should be making (especially on nutrition and recovery) then all would be very much welcomed!
I know seeing the donations start to trickle in is going to be extremely motivating during this preparation phase so please do click on the donate button and give what you can.
