Unfortunately every family is touched by cancer at some point and most are likely to receive support from the Irish Cancer Society.

My mother (Betty) was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 2021. Mam responded well to treatment initially but unfortunately the cancer spread and she lost her battle on 28 December 2022. It was in those final 2 weeks at home that the night nurses from the Irish Cancer Society came to our aid. The nurses provided professional and compassionate support over Mam’s final days. They answered the call over the Christmas period and ensured we could get some rest to keep the show on the road. It was Mam’s wish to remain at home and the Irish Cancer Society, together with the community team from Marymount Hospice and our family and friends ensured that could happen. Mam herself was a retired nurse and we had cared for our Dad at home when he became ill in 1996 until he passed away in February 2002.

As many of you may know, I enjoy running so one marathon would not have been enough of a challenge! So… I decided to run 4 marathons in 2024 in under 4 hours. I started in Tokyo on 3 March (3:22), followed by London on 21 April (3:32) and Chicago on 13 October (3:41). I will be finishing in Dublin on 27 October. I am funding the marathons and all associated expenses so all money raised here will go towards funding the Nursing Services.

In 2023, the Irish Cancer Society provided 9,831 nights of nursing nationwide. The cost of one night of nursing is approximately €430. I would be incredibly grateful if you could spare a few euros to fund the nursing services offered by the Irish Cancer Society.
