500 miles in construction PPE

Mates in Mind aims to raise awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and promote positive mental wellbeing in the UK workforce.

Story

LET’S STOP SUICIDES IN CONSTRUCTION

What Am I Doing?

On average, 500 people take their own live in Construction every year, it undoubtedly is the industry’s biggest killer.

Over 36 weeks from 1 Jan 2025 – 10th Sept 2025 I will be running 500 miles in full construction PPE. That’s right! Hard hat, glasses, gloves safety boots and overalls, so I will be doing on average a half marathon every single week for 36 weeks. I will be doing runs all over the UK throughout the event.

Why?

I am doing this to help start the conversation about suicide mental health within the industry. Working in construction can come with various stressors which can significantly contribute to an individual’s mental state.

My partnered charity ‘Mates in Mind’ work across the industry doing a number of proactive work to help reduce these numbers, their knowledge on spotting signs and symptoms is vast which they help to educate the industry through a number of targeted courses. I want to help people to start the conversation and I want to educate people along the way.

Goals

• Raise awareness and start the conversation

• Raise funds for Mates in Mind to continue to help them continue doing their amazing work!

• Engage with as many people as possible throughout the journey and talk about suicide

Who Am I..

My inspiration has come from working within the industry and looking at my young child every day, I was in her company one day while working from home and seen the statistics of Suicide, I looked at her and it absolutely scared me to think that suicide could take me away from her or her away from me. My thoughts then expanded to the people who it had happened too, which are on average 500 people a year! These are fathers, brothers, sons, cousins, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends who take their own life. I then also thought about their families and how that word changed all of their lives too. We need to make a change!

I have worked all over the UK in construction and seen many struggles for various reasons, so within my time I have always felt like I could help people. Without a doubt Suicide is our industries biggest killer. So, I want to help unite the industry, get people talking about it.
