Story

This just giving page is to recognise the work and help fund the research into more effective treatments of brain tumours. Any money raised here will go towards supporting The BTC and the work they do in not only funding research but helping individuals and their families who have been impacted by these indiscriminate and often aggressive tumours. My challenge is a 500 mile national walk to be completed inside 30 days.

I will walk a version of The Scottish National Trail. A long-distance walking route in Scotland, starting at the English border just outside of Kirk Yetholm and ending at Durness via Cape Wrath light house in the far northwest, traversing diverse landscapes including rolling hills, the Southern Uplands, the Highlands, and rugged coastal areas, I will essentially cross the entirety of Scotland from south to north.

Phase 1: The lowlands 140 miles from the Border to Glasgow via the St Cuthbert’s way up and over the southern uplands and on through the Pentland hills following a mix of paths and old drovers trails before reaching the Union Canal, I will continue via the Falkirk Wheel on to the Forth and Clyde Canal before reaching Milngavie to start phase 2.

Phase 2: The west highland a way a 96-mile hiking trail from Milngavie to Fort William. It was Scotland's first official long-distance trail and is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Starting just outside of Glasgow venturing down the rocky shores of loch Lomond before passing through Tyndrum and heading up through Glencoe and over the devils stair case on to Fort William. The WHW is where the civilisation of the central belt gives way to the wilds of the Scottish highlands.

Tyndrum deserves a special mention its annual rainfall often exceeding 1600mm, making it one of the wettest areas in Scotland - a country known for its wet weather!

Phase 3: The Cape Wrath Trail is a challenging, 230-mile long-distance backpacking trail in Scotland's West Highlands. It's considered one of the most difficult long-distance walks in Britain.

My Route: Starts in Fort William and ends at Durness via the light house at Cape Wrath, the northwesternmost point of mainland Britain adding around 30 miles on to the chartered route!

I will be passing through remote, sparsely populated areas includes Glen Shiel, Torridon, Fisherfield, Quinag, Sandwood Bay, and the MOD bombing range at Cape Wrath !

The CWT should not be under estimated its difficulty is compounded by the many river crossing, the unmarked and sometimes trail-less routes across many miles of exposed Scottish highlands. Along the route there are only limited re-supply points, and accommodation is scarce. I will be carrying full winter kit, tent and supplies. Accommodation will be a mixed bag, camping, mountain bothies alongside the occasional luxury stop at a BnB or Hotel!
