At least 21 people with epilepsy in the UK die each week. SUDEP Action, is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those bereaved by epilepsy, raising awareness of epilepsy risks and tackling deaths in people with epilepsy, including Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Story

On 18th October 2025, myself and some of my close friends will be taking on the Inflatable 5k Obstacle Course in loving memory of Jordan Shaw and raising money for SUDEP Action.

On Thursday 24th April this year, my partner, Jordan Shaw passed away during his sleep.

The autopsy reported he had died of SUDEP. Something his family and mine had never heard of before this. We didn’t know there was a possibility Jordan could pass away from his seizures and we have all been completely devastated by his loss.

This happened less than 3.5 months after Jordan’s first known seizure, and he’d only had a total of 3 seizures prior to his passing.

SUDEP stands for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy and it happens in an otherwise healthy and well person. It means the post mortem cannot find any other clear reason or cause of death in the epileptic person. No one knows the exact cause of SUDEP.

The charity SUDEP Action have been a great support to myself and Jordan’s family, they helped us all to begin to understand and come to terms with what SUDEP is, but they also offer free, continuous support to all those who are bereaved by epilepsy.

There are at least 21 epilepsy related deaths a week in the UK and epilepsy is one of the top-ten causes of early death. Yet many who are diagnosed with epilepsy, and their families, are never made aware of the risk of SUDEP and what can be done to try to prevent it.

There is still not enough understood about epilepsy and SUDEP - so support and funding for research is a necessity to help understand more about this life altering condition and prevent more epilepsy related deaths from happening.

Any donations will help the charity to continue to do their amazing work. The money raised for them will go towards things such as:

- The experienced and confidential support service they offer for families and friends who have been bereaved by epilepsy.

- Funding for important research into epilepsy deaths, SUDEP, epilepsy risks and epilepsy bereavement.

- Resources, tools and projects for those with epilepsy, their families, and health care professionals who deal with epilepsy, to raise more awareness.

Jordan led such a full life in his 30 years. He achieved so much, travelled to so many places and made friends all over the world. He had a huge love for life and even more love for the people in his life. All who knew Jordan experienced his caring, kind and thoughtful nature. He was someone who always liked to be doing something or going somewhere, and my life was so full of adventure, experiences and love with him in it.

Jordan was a beautiful son, brother, grandchild, nephew, cousin, partner and friend and he will always be immensely loved and terribly missed every day.

Thank you for your support.
