63 Peaks for 63 years of Dad

Guts UK is the charity for the digestive system. Our guts have been underfunded, understaffed & undervalued for decades. Guts UK’s work leads to earlier diagnoses, kinder treatments & ultimately, a cure, through funding research, raising awareness, and providing information.

Story

I'm aiming to achieve walking 63 Peaks across the South West and South Wales, one peak for every year of his life.

On 15th August 2025, my Dad was diagnosed with late stage Oesophageal Cancer, which by the time of diagnosis had unfortunately spread to his Liver, Lymph Nodes and Stomach. With Chemo we had hoped to get up to a year longer, without chemo he was told 'a few short months.' After 3 chemo attempts, all of which knocked Dad for six, causing several postponements, the cancer didn't show any signs of slowing or reducing and the decision was made in January to stop treatment and focus on quality of life as the chemo had taken so much of Dads energy and physical ability in the short time he was on it.

Dad had a few little aims in his head when he got diagnosed, the first was to meet his latest Granddaughter, Joy, who we welcomed in November. The next was to make it to Christmas, have everyone round his house and celebrate together as a full family. And then to make it to his Birthday on the 31st of December. I'm pleased to say he achieved all those little wins and can comfortably say he's made the most of a bad situation.

On February 18th, Dad peacefully passed away with my Mum by his side and a smile on his face.

I'm raising money for The Guts UK Charity, in the hopes of more being able to be done about recognising, preventing and treating Oesophageal Cancer - as well as others related to the digestive system.

-Around 9,000 people are diagnosed each year in the UK.

-It is the 6th most common cause of cancer death in the UK.

- Early symptoms can be vague, but the most common sign is difficulty swallowing.

- Survival rates are lower than many other cancers because it is often diagnosed at a later stage.

- Research is vital to improve early detection, treatment options, and survival rates.

-Funding helps develop better screening methods, more effective therapies, and ultimately saves lives.

I want to walk 63 peaks across the South West & South Wales to commemorate 63 years of my Dads life, with the aim of raising £1,962.00 to mark the year he was born. One of the last smiles I got from him was telling him about doing this challenge, so lets make it happen and do him proud.

I'll be taking on peaks in the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, Wye Valley, Forest of Dean, Cotswolds, Glastonbury Tor and ending with The Malvern Hills 15 peaks which can be seen from the Hospice he has been cared for at, Sue Ryder.

If you would like to support me - whether that's £1 per peak or a single donation, it would be hugely appreciated and will go to a very important cause.
