Getting Active For Autism Awareness Month

Friends of the Loyne supports the work of The Loyne Specialist School in Lancaster. It is a special school for pupils aged 2-19 with a range of learning difficulties.

Story

Today is World Autism Awareness Day and marks the start of Autism Awareness Month throughout April.

For our family, every day is Autism Awareness Day as we are continually learning how best to support and meet the needs of our amazing son, Tommy.

Our superhero was born in May 2019 and received his official diagnosis of (Non-Verbal) Autism Spectrum Condition with Global Developmental Delay at the age of 2 years old.

For the past 70 months since Tommy was born, Autism has been an unexpected member of our family which has certainly changed our lives in numerous ways!

So this year, we wanted to share part of Tommy’s story to help spread awareness of such a wide spectrum and to give something back.

Throughout April, Jemma and I are each committing to completing 70 miles across various forms of exercise (one mile for each of the months Autism has been a part of our lives) to raise money for Tommy’s outstanding specialist school, The Loyne Specialist School.

Over the past two years, The Loyne have been there in every way possible to support Tommy and our family. It is safe to say that we would simply be lost without them and we are forever grateful for Tommy’s place and the amazing opportunities and teaching he receives on a daily basis.

We would like to add that the aim of this fundraiser is not only to raise funds for The Loyne Specialist School to thank them for all they do for us, it is also to help raise awareness of Autism and the impact it has on families. We appreciate that current times are hard financially so if you are unable to donate, please take a moment to increase your awareness of Autism, reach out to someone affected by Autism and take a moment to reflect.
