The plight of Galgos in Spain centers around the mistreatment, abandonment and murder of these Spanish greyhounds (Galgos), traditionally used for hunting.

After the hunting season ends on February 1st, Galgos are surplus to requirement and face unimaginable cruelty and torture before they are destroyed. Common methods include throwing dogs into wells, leaving them in the woods with broken legs so they can't come home, burning them alive and hanging them from trees with their back legs barely touching the ground so they suffocate slowly. It is thought that the more a Galgo suffers, the more prosperous the hunting season will be the following year.

Some 50,000 Galgos, Podencos and other sight hounds face this fate every year. This mass cruelty is little known outside of Spain and the sighthound community.

In Spain Galgos are not viewed as domestic animals. They're considered worthless and are not governed by the same protections as other breeds of domestic dog. As a sighthound owner I know these animals to be gentle, funny and deserving of a chance to know what it is to be loved.

Animal welfare charities across the UK and Europe work incredibly hard to rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving homes for abandoned Galgos. They also advocate for stricter regulations on hunting practices and animal protection laws.

My fundraiser is for Galgos Del Sol and funds raised supports their efforts to alleviate the plight of these animals, promoting awareness, rescue initiatives, and legal reforms.
