The First Glasgow Scout Group

West Highland Way 2023 · 30 July 2023
At long last, after an entire year in the planning, this July nineteen Scouts and Explorers from the First Glasgow Scout Group will attempt to hike the entire 144 km/ 96 miles of the West Highland Way. Accompanied by 4 brave leaders (and a support team of 4 more leaders) they will set off from Milngavie and end their epic expedition in Fort William after 6 days of straight hiking, wild camping, sleeping under canvas (with a few hostels to refresh) whilst battling the Scottish summer elements and walking whatever-the-weather.
The aim of the game is not just to reach our destination. As the Scouts and Explorers are more than aware of, it’s all about the journey. Over the course of the six days, the youngsters will have numerous opportunities to obtain and improve various life skills from extreme orienteering to back-wood cooking; experiencing many once-in-a-lifetime moments, sleeping under stars and no doubt creating countless, amazing life long memories. This time round though it really is about the journey more so than ever and it is their intention to remember that when things get tough to think about other people and in doing so attempt to raise over £5000 for children's charities. The Scouts and Explorers are seeking to amass as many charitable sponsors as they can who will sponsor them for every mile walked (96 miles), each blister acquired or simply make a generous donation for their brave efforts. All sponsorship is greatly appreciated and no donation is too small.
Leaders have volunteered their time to ensure that our youngsters stay safe, well fed and not too exhausted whilst supervising them while they walk, driving the support van and moving the equipment and bags from camp to camp, preparing the dinner to be ready on arrival - just in time to successfully restore the hungry youngsters and replenish their energy after a long day of walking before yet another long day of walking. All monies raised via your generous donations will be split between our chosen charities, World Cancer Research Fund in memory of our own Scouts who we have lost recently to cancer and also our own Group to keep providing inclusive, life changing opportunities for young people in the West End of Glasgow
Unfortunately, as with all activities, there are costs involved which each participant has had to cover in order for the hike to go ahead. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
