Abi & Laura's fundraiser for BRCA+ Chat

G2E Ultra · 5 October 2024
Thank you for visiting our page and considering helping us fundraise!
As many of you will know, we (Abi and Laura) have given up most of our social lives and free time this summer to train for our first ultra marathon. On 5th October, we have signed up to run 57 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
Our good friend was meant to be by our side, running it with us as a trio. However, after being diagnosed with a BRCA gene mutation, she has had to prioritise her own health and undergo surgeries related to this gene meaning she isn’t able to run with us. Instead, she has been our biggest cheerleader and support throughout our training and will be there cheering us on the day.
Training for this has been some challenge, to say the least! So much so in August, not wanting to miss out on a music festival with friends, Laura ran her scheduled 30km long run while at the festival - we really have tried our best to still live life as “normal” while training. As our weekly mileage ramped up, we were looking for a bit of extra motivation. We decided fundraising would be exactly that, helping us to keep going, no matter how hard it gets. We thought, knowing we have our friend there supporting us, what better charity to fundraise and raise awareness for than one related to the BRCA gene mutation. Making our efforts have a purpose beyond the finish line!
BRCA+ Chat are a tiny but amazing charity who aim to help all humans navigating a BRCA gene mutation. A BRCA gene mutation is inherited from your parents and increases a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer from 12% up to 85-90%, and ovarian cancer from 2% up to 45%.
As a charity, BRCA+ Chat recognise that there is a need for more support services as often those diagnosed can feel overwhelmed and alone. BRCA+ Chat are there to provide emotional support and put people in touch with services to help understand and navigate their journey of living with a BRCA gene mutation.
Given they are such a small charity mostly run by volunteers, every penny really does make a difference. And we’ll be thinking of these donations when the going gets tough!
