Story
As allies of the LGBTQ+ community and members of the DLA Piper Iris Network, we are running the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for Micro Rainbow.
Want to join us in making a difference? Any donation will help make an impact!
Founded in 2012, Micro Rainbow is the leading not-for-profit organisation in the UK supporting the integration of LGBTQ+ people who flee persecution and reach the UK in search of safety and asylum.
Homosexuality remains illegal in 64 countries, with the death penalty still enforced or a possibility in 12 of them. Beyond these legal threats, social attitudes and stigma continue to make life unbearable and unsafe for LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide. While there is still progress to be made in achieving equality in the LGBTQ+ community, UK nationals can generally live safely and without fear of prosecution by the state. Micro Rainbow's fundamental programmes ensure that LGBTQ+ refugees are not only safe but also able to live fulfilling and independent lives. Micro Rainbow’s holistic approach to integration is based on three pillars: safe housing, social inclusion, and employability support. The organisation has won several awards for innovation and as a top social enterprise and is recognised for creating the first ever national safe housing scheme for LGBTQ+ people fleeing persecution, with a capacity of 31,000 bed-nights a year. Micro Rainbow is committed to eradicating the homelessness of people fleeing persecution in the UK and it continues to raise social investment to make that happen.
This will be Abi's first half-marathon and Sophie's second, and together we are taking this opportunity to raise vital funds for Micro Rainbow. These funds will support safe housing and help those fleeing persecution, conviction, or the threat of death simply for being LGBTQ+ transition to life in the UK. We are grateful for all donations – big or small – and are looking forward to the opportunity to challenge ourselves physically and mentally for a fundamental cause.
