Story
Delirium in critically ill patients is no joke – and it turns out, being stuck in a room with no sense of time, no daylight, no fresh air, no idea if it’s raining, snowing, or if we’ve entered a new ice age, might not be ideal for recovery. Who knew? Add in sensory deprivation, disrupted sleep, dehydration, malnutrition, constant beeping, and a general sense of “where am I and why is that machine blinking at me?” – and you’ve got a perfect storm for confusion.
So here’s the plan: we’re giving our critical care balcony a glow-up. Somewhere our patients can get natural light, see the sky, feel the breeze, eat, drink, wave at the pigeons, and maybe even recognise that yes, it’s daytime. Revolutionary.
As your friendly critical care pharmacist, I bring these patients the good stuff – the meropenem, the benzos, the propofol, the olanzapine, the IV fluids, and the occasional magic electrolyte when things get weird. But even the best meds can't fix a complete lack of fresh air and sunlight.
That’s where this project comes in. To show my full support (and possibly my poor life choices), I’m representing the Pharmacy Department in this fundraiser and am even willing to put myself (and my mild vertigo) on the line. I’ve abseiled down a waterfall before – so scaling a building to give it the seal of approval? Let’s do it.
Let’s make the balcony a beacon of fresh air, sanity, and maybe even a biscuit or two.
Who's with me?!
