Miles of Hope: Walking 121 Kilometres to Support Children On The Transplant Journey

Long Distance Virtual Walking Challenge · 13 August 2023
Last year my son was lucky enough to receive a kidney transplant, an unbelievable gift from an amazing person. This saved his life, and will hopefully give him many years of improved health and take him to adulthood before he needs dialysis again.
However at any given time there are between 100 and 120 children in the UK still waiting for a match. Some of these come from living donors (either direct or via the national swap scheme), others from people who have decided that they want to give the gift of life to others should something happen to them.
The support we have received on this journey from the Millie Wright Charity has been unbelievable. Practically they support with food, essentials during emergency admissions, and a friendly face on the ward. Longer term they want to fund social workers and research. To see Nige and Ceri week after week supporting parents on the ward where they spent so much time with their own daughter is beyond humbling.
I want to raise money for this cause and pay tribute to all the brave children still waiting for their lifesaving transplants.I can’t leave Alfie for any significant length of time to do a traditional long distance walk, he’s not well enough for that. Instead I’m going to complete a virtual challenge by logging my daily walking distance.
Between the 5th and the 13th of August I will walk 121 kilometres to complete the Conquerer’s London Challenge, one kilometre for every child still waiting. All money raised will go to support Millie Wright and the company I work for run a charity match scheme so even the smallest contribution you make will really add up.
