Story

Miles with meaning: Adam's taking on 160 Miles for RAFA

Adam Hunt from 2Excel’s Special Missions team, is taking on a challenge that goes well beyond the ordinary – all in support of our charity partner, the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA).

As part of the annual fundraising RAFA Rides series, Adam will be tackling a 100-mile cycle out and back from RAF Brize Norton on Saturday 20 June, joining fellow riders to raise funds for a charity that provides vital, ongoing support to the RAF community.

But for Adam, 100 miles simply isn’t enough. Rather than arriving fresh at the start line, he’ll be cycling from home to the event and back as well, pushing his total distance to an impressive 160 miles in a single effort. It’s a serious endurance challenge and one that will test both physical resilience and mental determination from the first mile to the last.

And just to make it even harder, Adam will be riding a 1980s steel-framed racing bike, rescued from a recycling centre and brought back to life; a deliberate choice that reflects not just practicality, but principle.

Adam said: “This bike was built from steel here in the UK in the 1980s. It’s solid, repairable, and could quite happily last a lifetime. Even then, it can be fully recycled. By comparison, many modern bikes are made from carbon fibre overseas and, while they perform well, they often have a much shorter lifespan and can ultimately end up in landfill.

"Of course, the trade-off is weight – my bike is definitely heavier than today’s models. But I’m not racing; this is about the challenge and the cause, so that doesn’t bother me at all.

"There’s also a misconception that you need to spend a lot to get into cycling. In reality, you can find great quality second-hand bikes very affordably if you’re willing to look, and there’s a huge amount of advice and support online to help people get started. For me, bringing this bike back into use felt like the right choice in more ways than one.”

This challenge is about more than just miles. It’s about going the extra distance for a cause that matters, with determination, ingenuity, and a strong sense of purpose.

The Royal Air Forces Association does incredible work supporting serving personnel, veterans, and their families — providing welfare, companionship, and practical help when it’s needed most. Every pound raised helps ensure no member of the RAF community faces hardship alone.

If you can, please consider supporting Adam’s challenge. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help power those 160 miles and make a real difference.
