The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory (SDSO) is located near the village of Dalmellington, on the northern edge of the IDA 'gold tier' designated Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park. The SDSO's principal aim is to enthuse and educate all interested parties in the wonders offered by dark night skies.

This new site, located within the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, will feature two observatories, a 360-degree planetarium, and a visitor center.Key Details About the New ProjectLocation: The new facility is at the former Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre, approximately 30 miles from the original site.Features: It will house two observing domes with powerful telescopes to view nebulae and galaxies, a planetarium, a cafe, and a gift shop.Progress: Following the purchase of the site in late 2024, plans for redevelopment were approved in March 2026.Charity: The project is managed by the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory Trust, aiming to provide educational and public stargazing experiences.Background on the Old ObservatoryThe original site near Dalmellington operated from 2012 to 2021, serving as a major hub for astronomy in Scotland.It was destroyed in a suspected arson attack in June 2021.A return to the original site was ruled out due to access issues and lack of utilities.
