Huế Marathon · 6 April 2025

JOCA is dedicated to promoting and ensuring pastoral care and general well-being for all members of our rugby club. With your help- our aim is to break socially constructed barriers and use a typically 'macho' sport as a way to get young men and women to talk openly and sympathise with each other.

Story

As most of you might know, I hate running. I couldn't think of anything worse than doing a marathon, but here we are.

I've signed myself up for this to raise awareness for male suicide in the UK. Insanely, suicide is still the main cause of death in young people under the age of 35 in the UK.

In 2023, 1,840 young people under the age of 35 took their own lives in the UK, around three-quarters of them were boys or young men.

This endemic has stopped so many young souls from living a long, and fruitful life and has affected countless more in heartbreak and loss.

One such soul was my childhood best friend and confidant, Ryan. As a result of this, and other, tradegies that affected Welwyn Rugby Club, a charity was set up to combat suicide and give young people a safe space to talk about their demons. Their mission is to:

create a better understanding of and to de-stigmatise mental health and mental well-being amongst the men, women and children players and members of Welwyn Rugby Club.

And the work that they do is not only brilliant, but so important in the modern day.

So, if you want to either contribute to this amazing charity, or simply want to pay money watch me suffer then please give as much or as little as you can. Every little helps.
