Team Sue Ryder are taking on the TCS London Marathon 2025 to ensure no-one faces death or grief alone. Every step you take will help us to be there when it matters.

Story

Not content with running my first Half-Marathon on 13th October 2024 at the Great Eastern Run here in Peterborough, I've decided to strike while the iron is hot, and I've gone and signed up to run the 2025 London Marathon!

Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. Whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one, or a neurological condition – they’re there when it matters. Their doctors, nurses, and carers give people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.

My Dad, Robert (or Bob) was diagnosed with primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis in 2000 aged 48. He had been gradually exhibiting symptoms over the previous twenty years and was working up until just after his diagnosis. After medically retiring in May 2000, he became unable to walk without the use of a walking stick. He also received a related diagnosis of early-onset dementia. He died on 11th November 2003 of a heart attack, aged just 51.

During his illness, he attended day care at Thorpe Hall once a week, which was a vital lifeline for me and my family when his activities were limited by his illness.

My Dad died at home on the day he was discharged from hospital. My Mum was going to hand in her notice at work the following day in order to become his full-time carer, as his symptoms had deteriorated and he couldn't be left alone for extended periods. However, prior to this, the day care he received at Thorpe Hall not only gave him a day out, but it staved off having to make that decision sooner than we were going to.

I'd like to give something back to what is a great institution in the Peterborough community. Now I'm fit after many years out of shape, what better way to give back than in a physical challenge? I'd never been a runner until recently, and prior to signing up to the GER, I hadn't run further than a 10k. I'm now going to run over double that distance in a Half Marathon at the 2024 Great Eastern Run, then go and double it in April 2025 at the London Marathon!

Please give generously to a very worthy cause, every penny raised will spur me on in training and around the iconic London Marathon course on the day!
