Story
“From ICU to “I do” in just 2 months, with thanks to the incredible team at The Royal Papworth Hospital & the SCTS, I got my future back.”
A few years ago, I underwent one of the biggest operations of my life at the Royal Papworth Hospital. Remarkably, just 8 days after lung surgery, I managed 10km on the hospital’s stationary bike. Three weeks later, I was back in the gym doing what I loved, only this time with even more energy.
A complex operation, but with thanks to my surgeon Aman Coonar, now also the elected President of SCTS, the results were great and I was fit again just shortly after, a real example and true testament to the SCTS core values: improving patient outcomes through safe, effective surgery.
Coincidentally, before my lung surgery, a congenital defect was discovered, another surgery was inevitable, however, it was in 2025 that my condition deteriorated.
With a wedding planned, and now my life at risk, it really was a race against time. After receiving life changing surgery preformed by no other than the incredible Mr Ravi De Silva and his team (SCTS member) using a minimally invasive technique in March this year I only had a short time to recover before one of the biggest days in my life. Needless to say, we did it, our wedding was perfect and I was symptom free for the first time in years.
Although I’m no Bradley Wiggens just yet, this ride really signifies the importance of the SCTS and what we stand for, from a theatre worried for my future to cycling 55 miles 6 months later.
Through these experiences, it’s clear to me how vital the work of the SCTS is. Their commitment to advancing patient care and driving innovation in treatment has changed my life.
This isn’t luck, this is the result of determined surgeons with a mission to improve OUR care.
By donating, you’re not only investing in your own future but also in the health and wellbeing of your friends, family, and countless others who may one day benefit from the direct impact the SCTS provides.
Please donate today and help shape the future of Cardiothoracic Surgery, your generosity can help change someone’s tomorrow, just like it changed mine.
Yours sincerely,
Adam
