Story

Dr Bhatt from Blaby Dental Practice will be raising money towards the research and cure of rare cancers in summer 2026 by taking on one of Scotland’s toughest mountain challenges.

He will be hiking the renowned Fisherfield Six — a demanding 41.7km circuit of Munros set deep in the remote wilderness of the Scottish Highlands, with an elevation gain of 2,850 metres. He plans to camp along the route and complete the challenge over two days, carrying everything he needs across this vast and isolated landscape.

This extraordinary scramble tests both commitment and skill. The route is unrelenting, with steep, near-vertical sections — including the ascent of Ruadh Stac Mòr — as well as rough, boggy ground far removed from any services. With faint or non-existent paths, it demands endurance, careful navigation and complete self-sufficiency.

Set against some of the most breathtaking and unspoiled scenery in Scotland, this is a true test of resilience — all in support of Cancer Research.

A rare cancer is one that affects a small number of people. Doctors might also call a cancer rare if it starts in an unusual place in the body. Or if the cancer is an unusual type of a more common cancer.

Experts in the UK and European Union say a cancer type is rare if fewer than 6 in 100,000 people are diagnosed with it each year. For some clinical trials, a cancer is rare if doctors diagnose fewer than 2 in 100,000 people each year.

Examples of rare cancers include:

Gallbladder cancer

Hodgkin lymphoma

Eye cancer

Rare cancers make up about 24 out of every 100 (about 24%) cancer cases diagnosed in the UK and European Union per year. This also includes children and young people’s cancers.
