Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page and thank you to those who supported Adrian's previous challenges to raise money for Diabetes UK. Over the past seven years, Adrian has looked for different and interesting ways to raise awareness and money for Diabetes UK. Each one has had its unique challenges (logistical, getting permission, weather, endurance, etc.) that meant success was never guaranteed.
Over the weekend of August 23-24, 2025, Adrian will paddle 124 miles (200 km) on a Stand Up Paddleboard along the length of the navigable non-tidal river Thames. He'll start at Lechlade, which is a few miles from the source of the River Thames in Gloucestershire, to Teddington Lock, the last lock on the River Thames before it becomes Tidal. He'll be doing this as a participant in the Thames 200 Ultra race, which is typically a race for faster sit-down craft. As a non-stop race, Adrian will face the new challenge for him of paddleboarding through the night, which will require extra focus to stay on track. He will also negotiate 45 locks, requiring portage (carrying his board and equipment) around each lock. Adrian's brother Stephen will be playing the important role of support crew, meeting him along the route to replenish the needed nutrition and water, etc., but is not allowed to assist with the portages.
Diabetes UK funds pioneering, world-class research into all forms of diabetes and its complications. The results of this research can improve the lives of people with diabetes all over the globe. Adrian has friends and family members who are living with diabetes.
The previous challenges completed by Adrian were:
2018: 23 miles stand up paddling across the English Channel
2019: 57 miles stand up paddling across Scotland between Fort William and Inverness
2020: 50 miles stand up paddling along the Ohio River
2021: 100 miles stand up paddling on all the lakes of the English Lake District where he was granted permission (13 of 17 at the time)
2022: 220 miles stand up paddling across England from Portishead Pier, up the Rivers Severn and Avon to Bristol, along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, and along the River Thames through Central London to the pier at Southend-on-Sea.
2023: 36 miles stand up paddling across the Irish Sea from the Isle of Man to Seascale in Cumbria.
2024: 100 KM tandem stand up paddling along the River Thames with his brother Tim Angell. This was a special challenge as Tim signed up with no previous SUP experience!
