The Gulf of Corryvreckan

Charity open ocean swim across world's 3rd largest whirlpool

Over the weekend of the 14/15th September I am attempting to make a swim across The Gulf of Corryvreckan in Scotland. We have a four-person team including my good friends Chris Cook, and Jo Lindsay and my lovely wife Meriel Younger.

For those of you unaware The Corryvreckan Whirlpool is situated off the west coast of Scotland between the islands of Jura and Scarba. It is one of the largest permanent whirlpools on earth and one of the most dangerous stretches of water around the British Isles. At full strength the currents can reach over 10 knots and produce waves over 9 m high. It is not a super long endurance swim (c1.5-2 miles but the mental challenge is high to say the least).

The area is also famous for another reason as between 1946-1949, the author George Orwell spent a lot of time at Barnhill on Jura while writing his famous novel 1984.

Why am I doing this?

Why may you ask I am attempting this? Well, firstly it’s a physical and mental challenge in one of the most rugged and beautiful places on earth and more importantly, it allows me to raise some money for a Charity which is very close to home for me: Salvesen Mindroom Centre.

The reality is that I don’t like asking for donations and, truth be told, didn’t really want to write this post. Let’s face it everyone is doing some form of challenge and asking for money !

However, all I ask is that you consider making a small donation. Apparently, I have c1500 measly connections/followers across all social channels ! If everyone were to give £5 then, bingo we have raised £7,500 !

Thanks

Adrian AJ
