Farewell to Leon's Lancaster - in support of Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre

Adrian Ellison is raising money for Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre
In memory of Leon Ellison

Farewell event · 11 April 2026

Our dedicated band of volunteers provide a wealth of knowledge on the War time operations occurring at RAF Metheringham and help to preserve the memory of those brave men and women that served.

Story

My late father spent over two decades first researching and then handcrafting an exact replica of the forward section of a WWII Avro Lancaster Bomber aircraft, which was to become a fully working simulator.

His vision was to be able to recreate the famous Dambusters Raid of 16-17 May 1943.

Although he had completed the actual aircraft section, he died suddenly in June 2024 before he could make it "work".

Over the past months, the family looked to donate the simulator to an organisation that would both nurture it, make it available to a much wider audience and ultimately try and complete it, in order to realise Dad's vision.

We are delighted to say that the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre, based at the original home of Lancaster bombers from 106 Squadron, has taken on the project.

Saturday 11 April 2026 see us host a farewell event, ahead of moving the simulator from Berkshire to Lincolnshire.

With your help, we aim to raise £5,000 to the cost of the move, which has required engaging a specialist haulage company. With your further help and support, Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre will build a purpose exhibition to house the Lancaster, feature its creator, and look to make it "fly" as a fully-working simulator.

Thank you so much for your support!
