1,295 days ago, my daughter Cassie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Today, after 42 months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment, a relapse then a life-saving Bone Marrow Transplant and post-transplant complications, she rang the ‘end of treatment’ bell! Julia and I couldn’t be prouder.
I am marking this memorable event in our lives by launching my JustGiving page to once again raise funds for LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity. From the point of diagnosis over three-and-a-half years ago, they have steadfastly supported us through every parents’ worst nightmare. The dedicated teams of doctors, nurses and specialists at Cardiff’s Noah’s Ark and Bristol Children’s Hospitals have provided Cassie’s life-saving medical treatment; but Latch has been there for every step of our journey with much-needed practical, emotional and financial help.
So it is only fitting that my CarTen 💯 cycling challenge this year raises funds to help this wonderful charity continue to support families of children struck by cancer. My fundraising target is £1,295, representing the number of days between diagnosis and bell-ringing. Please help me to reach (or even beat 😃) it by donating to my page so that LATCH can continue to support the families of children stricken by cancer and leukaemia.
This is my third consecutive year participating in the CarTen. It’ll be just as tough as the previous two years, but at least I know what lies ahead - AND I have the benefit of being able to train for it; Cassie had no training for her leukaemia treatment, Bone Marrow transplant or any of the complications and hardships she’s endured over the past three and a half years. But she has faced her challenge with the utmost guts and determination, and always with a smile.
Cassie has now returned to full-time school; life is beginning to return to normality. It’s been a rough journey. But her strength, resilience and determination have kept our family going. Witnessing how she has dealt with her condition has been a humbling experience and she remains a true inspiration to everyone who knows her. Her positivity shines through as she continues to live life by her favourite motto :- “When life throws you lemons, make lemonade”.
