Why do I care so much about dementia research?

Back in October 2020 I have lost my beloved grandma, who has been suffering with this horrendous disease. Living with her through this was a very painful experience. I am still struggling to deal with losing her, as she has co-raised me and we were extremely close

Not being informed enough to recognize early on the first symptoms, not knowing how to deal with the situation and in the end not being able to be there for her , has led to a lot of guilt that is still hard to process.

Since then, I have been on a journey...running the 2021 London Marathon and 2022 London Half Marathon have helped me deal with grief while contirbuting to research - and I am not done. Not until we as a society understand dementia end to end, from root causes to full developed modifying treatments.

Why should you care about diseases that cause dementia?

In the UK, dementia is the leading cause of death - in 2022 it accounted for 11.4% of all deaths! Even worse - it has been the leading cause of death for women in England and Wales since 2011.

YET... it is the only condition in the top 10 causes of death without a treatment to prevent or cure its progression!

At present, there are no disease-modifying treatments available in the UK for any type of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

To date, there hasn’t been a new drug approved for Alzheimer’s disease in 20 years.

Existing drugs only treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. They do not treat the root cause of the disease and so do not slow down how quickly it gets worse.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the global number of deaths due to dementia will increase by over 40% from 2015 to 2030!

1 in 3 people born in the UK in 2015 will develop dementia in their lifetime!
