David Shepherd is raising money for PSC - Support

Shakespeare Half Marathon · 27 April 2025 ·

PSC Support is the only UK charity solely dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by PSC. PSC has no known cause or cure. PSC patients urgently need a treatment that works. Please help us to fund vital medical research and provide information and support to PSCers and families.

Story

In April 2025, Adam and I will be taking on the Shakespeare Half Marathon to raise money for PSC Support, a charity dedicated to finding answers and supporting those affected by Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)—a rare, incurable liver disease.

This cause is incredibly close to us because Adam’s fiancée and my cousin, Leanne, was diagnosed with PSC in 2013 after experiencing severe itching in her hands and feet. What started as a routine visit to the doctor led to hospital tests, where she was found to have abnormal liver bloods, glandular fever, and suspected PSC. Thankfully, she met a doctor familiar with this rare condition, which led to further investigations and a referral to a specialist.

Since then, Leanne has undergone regular monitoring and scans at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, which has been incredible in managing such a complex disease. PSC has no cure and, three years ago, her condition worsened enough to place her on the liver transplant list, where she remains today.

PSC is a progressive autoimmune disease that damages the bile ducts and can have a massive impact on the liver. It is often misunderstood, with no known cause, no known cure, and no clear way to prevent it. Many people, including medical professionals, still don’t fully understand PSC, and research is vital to improving outcomes.

PSC Support is working hard to find answers by 2030, funding research and supporting those living with this condition. Every donation will make a difference in the fight against PSC.

We are running this half marathon to support Leanne and everyone battling PSC—and to raise awareness of this underfunded and under-researched disease. Any support, big or small, would mean the world.
